Quickie Music Vid

Still in the process of smoothing out some of the edit and coloring and all that, but thought I'd throw this up here, just to see how it's doing thus far. A quickie, last minute concept and shoot, no budget to speak of, all done in under a couple of days prep, and with only five hours available to shoot, so it's certainly not the greatest thing in the world. But still, I think it has its moments from time to time.

Quicktime

I thought the video was done well. Great movement, good balance with the music, great close-ups and good concept. Excellent work.

no you know what, that was a great example of a simple idea executed very well, and it doesn't hurt that the song was actually pretty good, versus most of the death-metal **** you usually see vids of around here, good work

I think it would have been funnier if he would've been shot with a paint gun.
The sissy :)

Two questions though, did you smoke the room, or was that just the QT compression ?
And if you got the video on MTV/Much music etc..., wouldn't the opening with the gun
negate your chances of getting aired ?

Part of it is the compression, yeah, but it's also got a bit of an AE lens flare filter over it. Over does it a bit when compressed, but I've been trying that effect lately, and it really tones down the video look of it all. Also, shot the windows way over exposed, right as the sun was coming in, so they'd really blow out. That made it airy too.

Yeah, I thought of the airing problem, but I'm doubting that it'll even get pitched to MTV or the like. Their new label is only picking them for their next album, not the first (which this song is on), so this is just something, I'm pretty sure, to be included in an EPK or for their website.

I agree with the popular opinion, it was really good. I love the camera movements on this, they are very smooth and sweeping.

Its amazing how far a good concept and song will carry a video. Great work!

Surely. Had a little 5' jib mounted to a small doorway dolly. Had a nice Sachtler head on there too, but can't remember what kind now. Lighting was two 650 and one 300 Fresnels, an open 1000w, and two little Tota fills. Shot all of the performance/chorus stuff at 24p, and the verses sped up and at 60, later slowed down to half to give it a little more injured, or labored feel.

Great work, good, simple concept, very well shot, way to move the camera!

Not a bad song either! Who is this band?

How much did the jib and dolly stuff run you if you don't mind me asking? Any additional info on this would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

I really did like those slower shots while he's on the ground. And they looked super smooth.

Yeah i agree with everyone here, very nice looking vid.

Could you tell us what camera you shot this video on?

Cheers

The band is LightFM, formerly a Chicago group, but just moved in the past couple of weeks out to LA (they've had loads of songs of those teen shows, like "One Tree Hill" and "Dawson's Creek" -- so they're trying their luck in the thick of it).

As for the cost, our rental fee was something under $500. Super cheap. Dolly was $50 or something and the jib wasn't much more. Add a couple of lights, a bunch of replacement t-shirts, food, and a tripod rental, and you're all set. Helps to own some of the lights and camera -- that cuts the cost down quite a bit.

As for behind the scenes stuff, I'll take a look tonight and see if we happened to get any shots where you can see the setup. Probably didn't get any of the dolly/jib though, as there weren't many mirrors around.

Don't remember the camera settings. We didn't really go in and change anything. 95% of the work was done in post, with the coloring and effects-y things all played around with in AE. I didn't DP the thing, so I don't know what he was doing to the camera, in terms of exposures and f-stops and all that. Pretty sure it was around 60 or 120 for the 24p stuff. Lighter for the 60i slow stuff shot on the ground.

And yeah, a doorway dolly. Little shop-made one that the rental company (I think) built. A little bumpy, but so much quicker than running track. I've used it a billion times and really like it.
