FS7: Quick, un-scientific Out-of-box CineEi / LC709a and Canon color science.

For camera’s under $15K, Canon color science and skin tones seem to be the gold standard, and with good reason because it’s very nice. Seems like the color science has been basically the same for years, from the 5D to the 60D to the C300; and why change a winning formula. Everyone loves the out of box look of Canon.

This is FAR FROM extensive or scientific. Just indoor natural light shot and one 5600K Kino enhanced shot.

The major thing I missed about Canon when I switched to the FS700 was the great, out-of-box look of Canon. While the FS700 + 7Q looked very nice, it always required grading.

I was kind of curious how the new-ish CineEI and LC709a colors compared to Canons so I placed both cameras side by side and did a couple of selfies. No colors were changed in either camera as I wanted to see the out of box look from both cameras. For CineEI, I just adjusted levels and saturation to match Canon’s, but once again, no color shifts.

I kind of dreaded doing this comparison as I thought Canon color science would just blow CineEI / LC709a out of the water, but that’s definitely not the case as they are both nice and cinematic, just in different ways. I actually find myself favoring the FS7 a bit as it’s not quite as golden colored; but that could be because I’ve been using CineEI for a while now and am used to it.

I also accidentally over-exposed the 5600K Kino enhanced daylight shot so it may not be a good comparion, but I was kind of surprised as the Canon was quite a bit more green when using the Kino. Sony has the historical reputation for having a green bias, so yeah... surprised a bit.

I was also surprised by how much CineEI looks like the Canon colors when just adjusting levels and adding saturation. CineEi grades very nicely just by adjusting levels and adding saturation which is a big advance for Sony IMO. With the FS700 and SLog2, I always had to shift the blues a bit to get skin tones that I liked. Lately, I haven’t been doing anything except just using LC709a or adjusting levels and saturation on CineEI.

While Canon doesn’t really have much to improve since it was good already, I think Sony has to be commended for really improving the color science over previous cameras like the FS700 or the A7s. I’ve been loving the out of box images from my FS7. So nice

Here's a link to much LARGER frames since DVXUser only allows smallish jogs.
