Is it possible to have an external hard drive and film streight to that from the camera? like, instead of to a DVtape? just wondering.
 
Or do the same with Adobe Premiere; set up the same way you would, to capture from tape; the software can't tell the difference between a live and a taped signal.
 
wouldnt i need a laptop for both of those? i dont know much. i was just thinkin of having an external with me while shooting. i dont think i can do what im thinking about without a laptop.

There are alternatives to this device as well do a search in hardware.
There are also other software products for lapstops being developed as well as DV Rack. for direct to laptop/computer transfer.
But if you mean hanging a firewire drive off the end of your DVX ...No.
