I read that its bad to connect the camera to the computer with the firewire if its on and stuff, so what is the proper way to connect it, and if ive already done it the wrong way, what problems may i face.

Most firewire cards are hot-pluggable, so I think you're in the clear. I don't think you've done any harm. Usually what I do however, is in this order...
With the computer and camera off, connect the firewire cord
Next, connect any other cords you may need to to the camera (RCA for full screen preview if you have one)
Next, turn on the computer, once it goes through its boot process and starts up, THEN turn on the camera, THEN open your editing/capturing software.
This may be overly cautious, but its better to be safe than to be sorry....

We were just talking about this in another thread. Seems the DVX, at least, can be harmed by hot plugging firewire.
