Quick Q.: Can the Firestorm ingest 720p/30fps from the HPX170

Still weighing buying a used EX against a new 150 (but with ingesiton/transcoding aspects) and using a Firestorm HDD to record directly form the 170---if the FS can record 720p/30fps, then I will use frame doubling in FCP to get my slo-mo. I think I read somewhere that the FS can record 720p/60fps, which would be my dream scenario.

Broad picture is that all I want is decent 720p footage, recorded at a reasonable price per gigabyte.

The 150 requires transcoding, and this seems to be costly, time-wise, tho' cheap memory-wise. Time IS money, as some wise person once said.

Can the gurus respond?

And is there a simple way to check on replies to posts in this forum without doing a search? TIA, kl

"Firestorm" : )

I was working as an actor on an HVX200-based project recently with some young filmmakers who thought the device was called a "Firestorm" too. They were *soo* disappointed when I told them it was actually a "Firestore" (as in 'Firewire Storage'). The loss of the cool factor of the 'Firestorm" name totally took the wind out of their sails. Ah youth... : )

Ted, I feel the same way and I am 55!

I don't know where that slip came from (a malapropism, I guess!), but Jester's reply begs the question: are all possible codecs fed to the FW port, or only some? I ask because I was under the impression that the P2 cards were required for some of these.

To reiterate, all I need is 720p/30fps (though the option of 60fps would be great), and the Firestore is the recording medium I want to use.

Can the Firestore record these two? I went onto their site, but could not find that detail. cheers, kl

All codecs are fed out the firewire port. The only thing that doesn't go out the firewire port is 720pN mode, and you can use the FS-100's menus to simulate pN mode.
