Hi. I'm not a sound tec but need a mic & have been offered a ME66 coupled with a K4 - I know they are normally coupled with a K6. Can anybody let me know if there are any problems/disadvantages with this combination. I've tried googling but to no avail....

Many thanks for your time.

please do not under any circumstances accept an me66 with any power supply. It is not a good mic. You can get a brand new rode ntg1 for $250 that will blow the doors of that ME66. You may not even want a shotgun. Do a search for oktava

Mike... I was under the impression the ME66 was pretty decent. Its used by many Pro recordists... is your opinion from personal experience?

The ME66, indeed the whole K6 line, is best characterized as prosumer or entry-level professional. When compared to the MKH416 or the MKH60 the differences become readily apparent (as does the price tag as well).

then it should be ok for what I need. Can either of you help regarding my original question... is it ok to use it with a K4 rather than a K6?

I looked around and cannot even find a picture of the K4 or much about it on Google so I cannot recommend that you buy it, simply because it is discontinued and ancient. If you have an issue with it, it may not be repairable. In the U.S., manufacturers are only required to stock spare parts for an item for 7 years after it is discontinued, not sure about the U.K.. I assume it was the predecessor to the K6.

As far as the ME-66, I own it. Have owned it since the late 90s. It's okay but not great. I also have an MKH-60 as well as an inexpensive Audio-Technica AT-875r. If I were buying another shotgun today, it would the Sanken CS-3e, a very good all around mic. I wrote pretty extensively about the ME-66 in this article http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/review_shotgun_mics.html back in 2001. You should listen to the Oktava and AT-875r in this article I recently wrote. Both sound as good or better than the ME-66 for a lot less money http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/right_mic_brockett.html

Enjoy!
