quick laptop question

Would this laptop work for P2 download. It has a pcmcia slot, I am just concerned about the specs (cpu etc) being able to handle it:

Dell Latitude 610 .

Intel Pentium M 1.2 GHz. processor

ATi Radeon Mobility Graphics

Hitachi 40 GB Hard Drive

Does the amount of memory matter to download?

Thanks Jim

I wouldn't imagine the specs of the computer would really matter. The processor speed will be of little concern as far as transfer rate is concerned.

The computer most likely would NOT be able to play back the footage, nor is a 40 gig HDD gonna get you far as far as storage is concerned

well you will use up a 40 gb hard drive in now time. A big portion of it is already used byt the os and programs. If the computer is a fresh instal with little or no start up programs it could work. Since that cpu is a single core it could struggle if anythign else is running. It would work, but not very fast or very well.

Does it have a FW port? If so, you can plug an ext. FW drive into it and open up your storage options.

+1... or even 2 USB ports, one for the cam, one for a drive... yea, yea, yea, firewire drives are better, but it will work fine and be fast enough for transfers... I would still use firewire 800 or other drives to edit with though over cheap USB ones.

I use a similar model, a Dell D410. The hard drive is cheap and easy to replace, up to 320GB. If you can find a copy of P2 Genie, it makes beautiful redundant offloads to internal and external drives.

I use an old macbook with PCMCIA to literally offload p2 and transfer on to ext drive. Cost about £220 for the laptop an works a charm.
