quick audio question

ok well i thought i knew how to do this but now i dont no. I have a sennheiser mkh416 mic (mono i guess) and i want to record the dialogue with that clearly, so im gonna run it into one channel on my dvx. first of all, it seems to be a good idea to use the other channel to record from the on board mic to get all-around sound and safety and environtment noise. Or should i just record the mono mic to both channels?
second thing-if i have one channel being the mono directional mic and the other the onboard, how to i separate them in post (Ppro),(delete one channel or the other, change respective volumes, make them into their own stereo tracks?)

I'd run the mic into both channel 1 and 2. Then run one at a normal level and the other slightly lower just in case something clips. For me, the onboard sounds so bad its not worth using at all.

In premiere when you get it in the project bin, before it goes on the timeline go to clip and reinterpret audio. bring it in as two mono channels and then you will have 1 video and two audio (mono) tracks for each clip. Note that this option wont be available for any clips already on the timeline.

great thats what was confusing me. thanks. but u dont think th eonboard mic playing at a low level might round out the sound a bit? or do u think it woul djust muck things up?
