Questions to RED OWNER

Dear Red Owners, I have been planning to invest on a RED myself sometimes this year. I have been looking at the RED websites for cameras, lens, accessories etc.

I found that many of the RED products are not even in stock right now. ( ex: Red Pro Primes, the RED ONE camera ) Are there any where else I can purchases these items?

Especially the RED PRIMES, there are only 2 RED PRIME and a zoom at this moment. Is it because they don't make them anymore??

Let me know if anyone can answer my questions.......

Thanks ! !

Red has stopped making the RedOne. It was available, but they recently dropped prices of cameras and offered their refurbished R1's at $3,000 or so. Those sold very quickly.

Red Pro Primes are decent lenses for the money. Not my favorites for many reasons, however the 50mm has been unavailable for a very long time now and they have not addressed this concern what-so-ever. People are hesitant to jump into that pool because it is assumed Red will not be revamping the RedProPrimes, at least how we know them know. So although not officially stated, it appears they are not making them anymore, and I would wait until after NAB to see if anything of interest rolls out.

So the RedOne is no longer made and it is assumed the RPP's aren't made anymore either.

Yeah I am actually looking at the Scarlet right now. And also some affordable Cine Lens ( 3k - 4k range )
I wonder will Scarlet price drop again if RED have new camera coming out.

^ With Red, you never know. But their recent price drop was in direct response to Sony releasing the F5/F55 line of cameras. They were making sure they were remaining ultra competitive. That said, I don't expect Red to drop prices because of a new camera they have, considering that new camera is really just a very expensive and powerful upgrade from an Epic. But with Red, who knows. I wouldn't wait for a price drop, if I were you. It is not impossible, but rather improbable at this point.

I'm actually looking at cine lens to invest. Around 4k range. Beside RED PRO PRIMES, are there any you guys recommend?
Not really into Lomo lens as they are too problematic to use......

Just stay away from the RED zoom glass - while optically okay, I had not exactly a stellar experience, regarding the mechanics - to say the least.

There was an older zoom they made which wasn't that great, I believe the 18-50? The 17-50 was greatly improved. The 18-50, albeit mechanically disappointing, was a lot smaller if I do recall. Something that sometimes comes in handy.

If you want to look at Cine Primes in your 3-4k/lens price range, your options are limited as that is actually low for cine lenses (haha, right?!)

I'd recommend looking into the new Sony 6-set of PL lenses, which are about 21,000 for all 6.
I'd recommend looking into CP.2's, as they have a very wide selections of focal lengths.

If you decided to buy less lenses at more per lens, the Cooke Mini-S4's are my favorites, and the Schneider Cine-Xenar III's are catching eyes of late.

I'm a lens connoisseur, so if you have any questions about Cine lenses, I'd be very happy to answer them here or in a PM.

Red is getting out of the Lens business all together. When their current stock is gone their will be no more.

Ryan, thanks for your info about lenses.

Sony PL lenses are for sure inexpensive, but i have never used or seen anyone used them before. Not quite sure if I will invest into their lenses. lol
CP2 have some super speed lenses I saw which are very impressive. But they are around 5k/ lens I think. Do you know if they dropped the price for the old CP2 ( the slower ones ) ? I can't find them for sale anymore.

I am only planning to buy around 4, and cooke lenses are ideal but is going to be out of the budget. Probably stick with renting on that one.

I think it's for the best they just focus on cameras.

I'd definitely recommend you test and inspect the Sony lenses. I've had very minimal time with them, so I can't vouch either way. But they are priced in such a way they should be looked at. It's strange I've not heard more about them yet.

The CP.2's might be a good choice. The CP.2 'SuperSpeed' editions are still around 5k/lens, however the slower 'regular' CP.2's are still just below 4k/lens. I don't think they have been dropped, however, maybe since so many have sold in the last couple of years you may see some good quality sets turning up in the used for sale market?

A fellow DP from Hong Kong says the Sony glass are the best little "secret" in the market. Have hold a couple in my hand and looks well made- not arri level stuff but good mecanichaly. Great bang for the buck.

I'd like test them. "Best little secret in the market" is good and all, but if you invest in equipment to rent, you don't want your product to be a secret success... if they are good, I hope it comes to surface. Otherwise, you'd be better to invest in another lens set with a reputation. If you are buying to use exclusively for your own purposes, do whatever you'd like.

I'm still very interested in testing a set. I think they have potential. Just need to see how well they work. Where is Duclos or Timur with a review?! :)

Good point Ryan. Reputation is important if I am looking to rent it out as well. But the price of SONY Cine glass is very attracting. I heard that you cannot buy those lens individually or something that you must get a set? Not too sure. Probably going to test it out before I invest on it. Is a little sketchy buying Cine lens from SONY.

I don't really agree with this. I have the 18-50 and 50-150 and I've had nothing but good experiences with them. For sure they aren't the best cine lenses, but for the price, you won't find a better quality/zoom range. For sure the zoom gearing could be smoother but it's not "disappointing", more expected at that price.

These guys look to be making some nice cine mod zooms - http://www.pchood.com/zoom film lens
