Questions for those at NAB

Hey all.

Thanks to those at NAB that have already given us so much info. A few questions I have yet to find answers for though:

1.) Varicam-like variable speed: I've seen variable speed recording listed as a feature. Does this actually mean Varicam's full 4-60fps range? Or is it just 24, 30 and 60p? I've acheived various lower framerates on the DVX100A by changing the shutter speed (to 1/24, 1/12, 1/8 for 12fps, 6fps, and 4fps for example), but is this something even easier? And offering higher framerates too? If so, can it be written with only active frames going to P2, or will it need to record the full 100 MBits/60p stream if in a mode other than 24p?

2.) The lens: Long and short end, minimum/maximum aperture, hard stops at the ends of the focus range, threading for follow focus built in?

3.) Image control: Other than 24p, I thought the biggest breakthrough of the DVX was the image control it afforded me. I loved being able to adjust chroma, color temp, and other settings in useful increments. I don't expect the HVX to be a step backward, but is it a step forward? For one, the XL2 offers full RGB adjustment in nice increments... anything like that here?

4.) P2 pricing: I've only seen $2000 for 8GB cards... what about the 4GB and 2GB cards?

5.) P2 deck / easy data dump device: anything other than a laptop available for downloading your P2 cards?

Many thanks,

Will

1) no details yet, but it'll be more like the VariCam than just 24p/30p/60p. I don't expect full every-fps control, but it'll be variable.

In 720p mode, only active frames are written to tape. In 1080 mode, it's always 100 megabits.

2) 4.5 to 58.5mm. No indication of aperture. Most likely no hard stops built-in, but Century will almost certainly be adapting their ring which would give you hard stops. Don't know whether the final design will be threaded for follow focus.

3) No details on menu settings yet. I'd expect at least as good as the DVX.

barry.. i havent read yet what the filter thread size is.. is it actually 82mm.. it looks closer to the 72mm of the DVX in the pics. any word.

also let me say .. you were right about the tape drive..i was wrong in my assumption. and im glad you were right! ..at least can hope i got the direct recording to off the shelf external HDD assumption right still. were all winning with this thing. hold it a little longer .. just for me will ya. lol

I was looking for the confirmation that you could record to an external hard drive. Where was it?
thanks,
Sam

Forgot to ask... I've heard 82mm, I'm pretty sure it is, but I forgot to confirm.

..what good are you anyway!!? we want details barry .. details!

-barry responds.. "you want the details... you cant handle the details!"
lol

..anyway. nevermind me.. im still shaking off an 18 hour production day from the weekend.

thanks for keeping us updated barry. it really is appreciated that you guys are taking time out to keep us informed.

..have fun youz guyzez.

I'm also curious to know what they mean by acting like a varicam in 720p. Hope you can choose from 4 to 60.

No details released. However they did have a slide at one presentation and it did say "4 to 60" on it. It's been alluded to that it won't be absolutely every frame rate between 4 and 60, but also that it will be more frame rates than just 24, 30 and 60.

So we don't know, but it looks like it'll at least offer 4, 24, 30, and 60, and likely many more as well.
