Questions about the Canon 5D

Hey Foster,
Do a search for 5d issues / problems and you'll see what people have said. Most cameras have some set of limitations, it just depends on your shooting style, what you're using them for and your environment.

And yeah, most cameras don't have great audio built in. You can get a nice mic and recorder for 1/5 of your investment for the 5dII. If your question is "do we agree with the article", yes, he's saying that the onboard sound isn't great.

Do you have other specific questions? Because without knowing what your intended use is, nobody can tell you if this sounds like the right camera for you.

I just answered a similar question here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?240308-Questions-about-using-the-7D-550D-T2i

Similar cameras, similar issues.

Thank you both for your responses. Please excuse the double post, but I wanted to be thorough in covering my bases. I realize they are similar cameras
but I have learned very quickly that you have to watch for the differences.
What I want to use it for is narrative stories or documentaries. I also want to use it cover events.

I just want say I appreciate the information and your patience.

To be honest, I didn't realize that it was you that did both postings. Haha.

The 5D has the same overall "disadvantages" as the 7D. However, the 5D has better low light performance and a full frame sensor (which makes it better for wide shots).

Also very important is that the 5d does have manual audio controls, so with the right gear and technique you can achieve decent in-camera audio. The 7d has AGC which cannot be turned off, so in camera audio is almost impossible.

Although I try to stick to separate sound, I have had decent enough results recording straight to the 5D using manual levels. It works fine for interviews. Assuming you have a decent mic it is acceptable quality, particularly after you've mixed in some atmos to give it a bit more depth.
