Questions about my editing workstation

Hey guys, these are the specs for my Mac Pro that I have fcp installed on(and soon AE)

MacPro 2.8 8CX/3X/1G/320/2800XT/SD/BT

I installed 8 Gigs of ram on it the day I bought it. My question is this:

I plan on shooting a lot of HD footage this summer and want to know if I should get an external drive to load the footage on or get the 4 terabyte memory upgrade?

Also, what kind of video card should I get or upgrade too?(within a couple hundred dollars price range)

Whats the best alternative to the MAC 30 inch display? Should I spend $800 on ebay and buy a used one or the full 1.8k on a new one?

Any other enhancements or upgrades I should get for my system? I shouldnt have any problems with fcp and ae running on the same system right? Thanks guys and I look forward to your responses!

HD footage from which camera? Also FCP and AE have zero conflicts running on one system.

hey noah, the camera is a panasonic gh1 and shoots full 1080, so going to need alot of storage. Ive heard of external drives and that wouldn't be a bad way to go, but if there is a better method, I'm game.

Also, I saw a pic or a post on here once(can't remember where) and it was about storing your footage on some kind of server/host built specifically for footage, so like an external drive specifically for footage, and large quantities.

Thanks.

I don't think you'll need tons and tons of storage- it will probably wind up as ProRes or ProRes HQ I'd guess. I like the G-Tech RAID systems though as David suggests a bunch of internal drives would also be up to the task.

Guys what about upgrading to an awesome video card? FCP is skipping frames sometimes and I want to upgrade my video card to something that will last me for a while and allows playback without any hiccups. Thanks.

I have no idea what an "awesome video card" means. The 4800 nvidia Quadro runs $1700, and is a strong performer for FXPlugin, and Open GL. Helps with renders in both FCP and Motion. But it might be best to be specific about what you want in a video card. Awesome doesn't help in that discussion.

Frame dropping is basically unrelated to video cards. It is related to drive speed for the most part.

awesome
adjective
the Grand Canyon is as awesome as they say it is: breathtaking, awe-inspiring, magnificent, wonderful, amazing, stunning, staggering, imposing, stirring, impressive; formidable, fearsome, dreaded; informal mind-boggling, mind-blowing, jaw-dropping, excellent, marvelous; literary wondrous; archaic awful. ANTONYMS unimpressive

Now don't be a goofball- what David was trying to say was what's important to you in terms of price and performance.
