questions about buying secondhand

Hi all! Great forum btw.

I am seriously considering buying a second-hand dvx100 (is this the one with interval rec?), possibly an xl1s or pd170 for filming a video diary of a project I am doing in India. 2nd hand because I am on a limited budget (£2000) and still need mics, tapes, etc... If I buy new I am limited to a sony vx2100 or similar.

My questions:
Is it obvious if the heads have been damaged or merely need cleaning? (I may not know the history if its sold via a third party) I am thinking of bringing my laptop to the seller and shooting a bit of test footage then playing it - is this easy enough to do quickly and would I be able to tell the quality properly?
If I get a dvd of something shot with a dvx100 would that give me something to compare with?
What range of shooting hours would people consider acceptable for second hand?
Anything else I should look out for when buying 2nd hand?

(I tried searching the forum but kept being told '2nd' 'second' 'hand' etc were too common as words and would be omitted from the search!)

Many thanks in anticipation.
