FS5: Questions about Atomos inferno

I am trying to understand how to operate the Atomos Inferno properly. I am connecting my FS5 (raw) via SDI. I have read up on how you are only supposed to use Preset 7 and how to expose for S Log 2. But, I don't understand what I am supposed to do on the Atomos, beyond selecting the my Pro Res and reading the various graphs. In one of the menus it shows Rec a 709 and then an ATOMHD Button and so forth. So, these are controls that only effect what you see on the monitor, right? Unless you select Log to Video? So what is the default mode on the Atomos? If you start recording with the SLOG-2 selected on the camera, are you recording SLOG-2 on the Atomos not matter what? When you initially turn on the Atomos it comes up with the Rec 209 button already lit and you can't turn it off. So yes,I have read the manual and still don't quite understand what is going on. Hopefully someone here will be kind enough to set me on the correct path...

I guess it can all get confusing.
The SDI output should be what you're recording, so if you are recording SLog2, then that's what's going to be going out the output. However, the Atomos will be recording it with a different codec, not XAVC, but ProRes or DNxHD or whatever you set it to. ProRes has a good reputation as a solid codec and some prefer that over XAVC, although personally I don't have a problem with XAVC.

The real advantage of the monitor is that it is so much bigger than what the camera comes with, so you use it to frame your image, take exposure readings using the monitors, and can also use it for focus.

The unit should also give you the possibility of burning a look into the footage and recording that.

Not sure what a 209 button is. Did you mean 709?

My guess is that is a choice of monitoring LUT available to you and you should be able to turn off somewhere in the menu.

The best way to learn it is to take the manual and just play around with recording a bunch of stuff, take notes, and see what does what. That's the best way to get to know it.

The Atomos simply records the code values it receives from the input.

If you get log you might want to monitor using the built-in color space transforms (if it is available for your camera) so that you get a larger dynamic monitor range than Rec.709. The same with HDR10 (us PQ) or HLG, Atomos can handle that as well.
