How do I record onto my laptop hard drive recording live from the HVX200a. Do I just go to log & capture in Final Cut Pro with a fire wire cable? I am supposed to record for 3 hours. How many gigs would that take up filming in 1080 HD?

Yes, you can do that, although you might want to instead use a dedicated capture application such as OnLocation or ScopeBox or something like that.

3 hours = 180 minutes = 180 gigabytes.

You can do this with Final Cut. You'll find a number of very helpful discussions about recording this way by searching the forum.

You could look at HD Monitor Pro for direct to disk recording. I've been using DV Monitor Pro with a DVX for years and love it.
