i am shooting a low budget music video, how do i go about teh music with the edit, do i play the music on a boombox and let the artist sing. and should i keep the music high or low.
Whenever I've done this in the past, I play the music on set (boom box, or whatever works) and use this as a guide track to sync to later in post. Have your levels loud enough to hear it when you playback - Just don't go too hot with your levels or you'll distort it.
Another interesting method I've used as an AC on videos is having a visual timecode created - basically a simple video track of numbers that run the duration of the song. You then marry the video with the audio and use an ipod with video as your playback source, as you begin rolling, grab a couple frames off the ipod's screen. It's like a slate.
Regardless of the method you choose, encourage the artist to actually sing and perform on the day - oddly, I've come across a lot of artists who are shy about actually singing along with the track for their videos...they want to silently mouth the words and 99% of the time it looks terrible.
