Question regarding 24p for theatrical release

Hey all-
Im planning on shooting a doc this winter on my DVX 100 (yea, old school). Ive shot quite a bit in 24p mode, and love it. However, does anyone have experience with dvx100 24p blown up on a theater screen? How clean is the image at that size? Constructive questions/comments...

Yes, I've done it, and several theatrical films have done it (Murderball was nominated for an Oscar, November won "best cinematography" at Sundance, another pic won best cinematography in the doc category).

DVX/24p blows away any interlaced-camcorder standard-def film transfer I've seen, but I wouldn't say it's "great"; it seems to be "acceptable". If you're in the back of the theater it looks fantastic; if you're in the first few rows it'll still be fuzzy.

In other words, transferring to film is not something that's likely to happen, but if you do, you won't be shooting yourself in the foot by using DVX/24p. It can look fine.

I shot my last documentary on a PD 150!

It played at several theatres and the quality was better at some theatres than others (I guess because of the projection equipment used). Of course, it didn't look like anything out of Hollywood, but it was good enough because it's a wonderful story, and I believe that's what audiences truly want to see.

I have to believe that the DVX, shooting in 24P, will be more than adequate, technically.

Good luck with your project!

Bill
