Question! Question! My laptop and HD footage.

Dear all! It's been a while.

This morning I sold my DVX100 for a reasonable price, and purchased a HVX200. As I am unfamiliar with the HD workflow, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with my workstation; do I need an upgrade, looking at my current hardware setup below?

you SHOULD be fine. i edited my hvx200 footagoe on an old 1.0ghz mac laptop for a couple years. and your machines is much better than that was.

it wont be blazingly fast. but it should get you by

Yeah, not spectacular, but workable.

What are you using to cut? Some things will work better than others, in terms of speed.

If you do end up getting a new computer and you dont have a lot of money DEFINITELY GO FOR AN IMAC! These little computers are so underated. I edited 1 and a half hours worth of 1080 60i with graphics and everything in final cut and not once had a problem or had huge render times.

But your laptop should work ok like the others have said. My advice would be to render as you go. Little bits at a time. It will cut down on the 45 minute renders you have to do etc.

Hello David,

Currently I am in bed with the CS4 package. However I am experienced with AVID, FCP and Vegas. I choose to bunk with Adobe because of the package. But as time passed I am becoming less and less impressed with the dynamic link system - that is also a huge factor in the slowing process.

At the moment I am unaware of a 64bit alternative. I was happy with AVID pro, but the lack of 64 bit support made me look for other software. What would you suggest, out of the mentioned software?

Buying an Imac is exactly what I will do if my PC is unable to perform accordingly. I worked with Final Cut Pro and loved it.

If you're happy with CS4, then stay with it, because it's got the best P2 integration. And, it'll probably give you the best performance on playback with your system.

CS5 is a distinct improvement over that, too. If 64-bit support is what you're looking for, that's it. It flies. And with the right graphics card, leveraging the Mercury Playback Engine, it really flies.

But, if you're not happy with Adobe overall, then that's your call.

I will give CS5 a go, then. It is a logical upgrade from the software that I am using.

A different question: can I store rendered HD projects on DV? I think the answer is no, but I would like to make sure, since otherwise I will have to find an alternative to archive my projects.

there are two main schools of thought on this:

1. LTO tape
2. external hard drives

LTO is more dependable. but more expensive, slower and cumbersome to reload.
hard drives are faster cheaper and easier. but have a higher statistical rate of long-term failure.

however, as in most things, individual mileage may vary. ive been using external hard drives for about a decade and have yet to have one fail. ive had enclosures fail. but not drives. and ive had tape drives fail.

so you will get pro and con suggestions for both
