Question on Settings

I shoot a lot of car ads in an outside lot where I don't have control over lighting and have to zoom and am not so close up to the subject in order to fit in the cars we advertise.

I am shooting 480i/30P in DVCPRO mode on the HPX-170. I have to shoot in this mode because I only have one 16GB P2 card and I need the full hour for the shoots usually.
This ad isn't as bad as some of the other ones get at times. And it doesn't look as bad on the computer as it does on TV either. But as you can see as the shot zooms out, the talent isn't that sharp. I am sure that there is a way to get the picture to come in better in these situations, but I am at a loss. I have tried playing with a bunch of settings, but I can't get it to be as clean of a picture that I want it to, even though it is NOT in HD. I haven't tried it in HD because I don't need to broadcast in HD yet and again, I don't have the P2 cards for it.
Any help, suggestions, advice would be greatly appreciated.

The wider you get, the less detailed your talent is going to be. That's just the physics of the camera, the codec, and the SD frame size. It'll shine with medium shots and closeups, but in wide shots, where your subjects are small, they'll be low in detail. You've only got 720 by 480 pixels to work with, and at full wide the way you are, the guy's features are only a few pixels each.

But, one thing I'll say is that it looks pretty overexposed. You should be running zebras while you're doing this, and preferably the waveform (though you can't really use that while shooting as it blocks a lot of the shot).
