Question on Overcranking

So I shot some 720p60 footage at both 1/120 and 1/250 shutter speeds and inserted them into an FCP sequence which was at 720p24 (24p footage already laid down so it didnt ask me to convert the timeline into 60p). Time-remapped both to 40%, rendered, and what I got was some pretty jumpy slow motion.

So I tried again, this time inserted the 60p into a 60p timeline and time-remapped to 40%. SMOOTH SLOW MO. Beautiful.

Question: How do I make this type of fluid slow motion from 60p footage when I insert it into a 24p sequence? Intend to output at this framerate so I cant work at 60p. Most of the footage is at 24p...

You need to reconform from 60p to 24p using Cinema Tools. I don't have a link (on my iphone) but do a search for reconform or Cinema Tools and you should find it.

the best way to conform the 60p stuff to 24p is through cinema tools.

create a new folder and *copy*(hold option and drag to copy) all of your 60p clips in it to be conformed
open cinema tools, it might prompt you with 3 options, open, create and read documents
just click create new and then cancel, you don't need a project to do this.
then in cinema tools, click file>batch conform
then navigate to your folder with your 60p clips in it.
select one clip and then hit ok
a window will open asking what you want to conform to, select it in the drop down.
cinema tools then performs magic and sorcery while you wait(very shortly)
now you how have 24p clips that are 60p'd and 1.5x longer than before.
and usually i will change all the filenames to have 60p in them so mark a difference.

enjoy.

edit, changed to copy clips and not move clips. so that way you have overcranked and non overcranked clips.

wow. that was pretty cool. thanks shrigg and mangler!!

too bad it decided to do away with my original clips though.

how can you do it on a PC?

Sorry to thread jack,

it depends on what program you are using.

In Vegas, there is a problem with native avchd footage playback when recorded at 60p, so I use Raylight in tandem with the Mainconcept transcoder. I convert to DVCProHD and bring it into Vegas with Raylight running. Then the process is the same... The footage has to be played with because for me, it just doesn't have the same look, but the slow motion is smooth and lovely.

whats the problem with 60p? i didnt even know the hmc could do 60p, i thought it was only 30p, 24p and 60i

Yeah, it seems like there is a software issue in Sony Vegas when dealing with 720/60p footage... when rendered it stutters and goes crappy; Sure, the HMC can do 60p... so I only use the transcoder and Raylight solution with 720/60p footage. Also, I mostly edit native based on my findings about Intel Chips (I've posted about this stuff in other threads), so I only transcode in these cases only, period. The native clips just look phenomenal when rendered, more so than transcoded footage. I really believe that.

that last message was at mangler...forgot to quote.

one more question. is it possible to reconform 60p footage so it plays at normal speed at 24p instead of slow mo?

so, how do you use the raylight program? i have it, how do i use it with vegas and my hmc footage.
