By a "Sin City" look, are you talking a very contrasty black and white? What do you mean by a brown color. Do you want a single shade of brown on just the faces? I'm trying to get an understanding of exactly what you want to do.

basically, he wants black and white, with dashes of color thrown in.

I'm in the same boat, reach. I have been trying out Vegas 6 lately, because I've been using Liquid Edition for awhile and finally came to the conclusion that it doesn't support true 24p video capture (even though it says it does). But my gripe is that c.c. like the Sin City effect is sooooo easy in Liquid Edition, and I can't figure out a damn thing about Vegas. seems to be a much slower workflow in Vegas so far. So if anyone can answer Reach's question, I'd also like to know!

There is a tutorial on the VASST site which should get you started. I think it's called "Pass the color."

I guess it depends entirely about how you shot the scene. Making things black and white with a single color showing through is not hard to do, but if you have lots of the same colors in the scene then it will make it much harder. The key is to use the secondary color corrector and pick the color that you want to show through. You may then have to go in a place a garbage matte around the person that would follow the main character and what you want to be that particular color.

As far as the 24p capture Lawsuit, there actually is no such thing. What Vegas does is detect what type of footage you have, whether it be 24PN or 24PA and then applies the appropriate pulldown meathod while editing in a 24p timeline. Therefore, you are only working with the true 24p footage. Hope that helps.

You can often achieve a quick "color pass" using the chroma key tool. I believe that last time I did this, I duplicated the video track and used the chroma blur > chroma key > black and white... in that order... on the top track. Leave the bottom track full color and make the needed adjustments to the chroma key on the top layer.

There are some different methods to do it using layers and chroma key that work better at isolating a full color range, but this way is pretty quick.

Hope this helps at least a little bit!

actually yes, that helps a lot, Scharky. The whole pulldown procedure used to confuse me a bit, but I've been reading up on it. and your info shined some more light in the whole capture stage. Thanks a lot.

I have one more question. I'm a little fuzzy on this so, after pulldown, is the video true 24p or is it 23.976?
