QUESTION on 1080p VS 720 quality

hello,

I got a question since I got my GH1 shooting video.

I shoot the same thing with the unhacked 1080p (FHD) and 720 60fps (SH). The color from 1080 is more pale and grey while the color from 720 is bright and vivid. I have the same aperture ISO shutterspeed setting.

Is it normal? Why there's such a color difference?

Thanks for any input in advance.

p.s. Even I put in the hack to shoot 1080p native-24 44MB it result as the same color difference.

Install the hack and you will notice a vast improvement in the color on 1080p footage due to much more space to store the detail. It's still 4:2:0 but it looks MUCH better to me!

Thank you for your reply. In fact I tried unhack and hacked, both are having the same difference. Pls see the frame capture of my testing videos. They are using the same aperture, shutter-speed, ISO, WB......

You can tell 1080p is less saturated and contrast is lower. Its' more obvious when played on an HD TV.

Anyone can explain? :dankk2:

There's a lot more jaggies on the 1080p, may be due to your scaling! as for colour not that different, a bit less saturated, but could be a good thing!

to be honest there isn't that much of a noticable difference between the two with the pic you have supplied. less saturation more room in post? could be as simple as resolution having an optical effect on perceived saturation.

yeah I don't see a big difference either. Also you could always tweak your color up by 1 in the menus when you shoot 1080 24p if you want, or change to vibrant... but it's better to do this in post I think than in camera if you are doing a project. If it's just for whatever then just boost it up in camera to you like it or use the vibrant film mode.

Most people shoot in smooth, which is less saturated.

I really don’t see that much of a difference between these two photos.

But….the first thing that comes to mind is…”shutter speed.” When shooting 24p what is your shutter speed? When shooting 60p what is your shutter speed? They are obviously going to be different which can affect the amount of light you are getting. The 60p footage will be a little darker than the 24p due to the higher shutter. That I believe is what most folks are seeing. But …what do I know. :)

Yeah, it looks like a slight exposure difference. It could also be that the 1080 encoding is slightly different. A lot of variables could come into this play to make this small difference.

I think less pixel sites for colour sampling on 720, more averaging of colour, less subtleties therefore appears more a of a 'block' of one strong colour in certain areas.

Over-saturated isn't good in my eyes.
