Question: interlacing on 480i 24pa

I am staring a new documentary and will be shooting in this format on DV tape. I noticed the footage is quite interlaced when played back on tv.

before I go too deep into my filming, am I shooting in correct mode? Should I shoot in 24P? or 24PA?

Will there be options to de-interlace in post? I use Speed Edit and when setting up my time line the three options it offers regarding "fielding " are:

"Automatic from file"

"Progressive"

"Field 1 above Field 2" or

"Field 2 above Field 1"

Automatic from file yields the worst results. I chose Progressive and this still displays interlacing.

Thanks

Searching around the Web, it looks like SpeedEDIT doesn't remove pulldown from DV footage, so I don't think you'll be able to get rid of the interlacing.

That being the case, shoot 24p standard, not 24pA, and edit as normal DV.

Although, I did see some reference to SpeedEDIT being able the "handle" 2:3 pulldown. From the context, I took this to mean that it can edit 24p material if it's in a 60i stream with 2:3 pulldown. But it MIGHT mean it can remove standard 2:3 pulldown, so you might try that. This would be odd, that it could remove 2:3 pulldown but not 24pA's 2:3:3:2 pulldown, so I doubt it can, but maybe.

Either way, it appears that you don't want to shoot 24pA if using SpeedEDIT.

Or, you can apparently remove the pulldown in another program and edit it in SpeedEDIT as straight 23.976, but that'll require (obviously) another program.

Thanks for the advice

I'll speak with Speed Edit people just to double check

Is there a quality difference between the two formats? If I shoot 24P it looks like I will have more editing options later if say, I want to edit my program on Final Cut or Avid... is this the case?

Thanks again

There's no quality difference. It's the exact same footage, only it's arranged differently in the 60i stream.

If by "editing options" you're looking to be able to edit AS actual 24p in other NLEs, then shoot 24pA. It's a must for FCP and still the best way to go for the other NLEs which can remove either advanced or standard pulldown.

just to confirm and before I shoot any further, 24pa is good because I can do pull down in after effects then transfer back over to speed edit

or just edit on another program?

but why don't I just shoot 24p and save the hassle of all that transferring? this seems to make the most sense

big shoot on wednesday... really appreciate the advice

I decided to shoot this project in 24p. No point in doing the extra steps of pull down which my NLE doesn't support. I would have to buy all new equipment. And from what I understand 24pa is really best suited for projects that will eventually be transferred to film. I am not doing a film transfer, this will only be played though dvd's on television.
