Question: How to focus lock in Movie Mode with Sony alpha 6000?

Relatively new to Sony alpha 6000 using mostly for stills. Today tried to shoot video of geese taking off from pond using Program Auto setting (was not a planned shot, sort of run and gun). As I panned with geese a near-by tree trunk came into shot and camera immediately switched focus to tree. Impressive how quickly it focused on tree, but it messed up my flying geese shot as they went out of focus. I tried to muddle through Sony manual to find solution but gave up and called Sony tech help. They muddled through their search engines and came up with Focus Lock setting but could not describe how to use it. By experimenting in movie mode I found only way I could make focus lock seem to work was by selecting subject, then pushing still photo shutter button half way down to "lock" focus on object and while holding shutter button half way down also press movie record button--awkward to say the least. But is this the best way to lock focus on a moving subject in movie mode and still be in Program Auto setting (for run and gun)? The only way it seems I can use manual focus in movie mode is to select Manual in movie mode and I am afraid this means I also need to manually set shutter and aperture settings??
