Question from a newbie

Hi guys, I just bought the GH2 kit with the 14-140 lens, I am going to use this as a small B-cam to my AF100 that I will be ordering next week, I have no prior experience with DSLR's I am coming from a HPX170 which I used a SGblade 35mm adapter with Nikon manual lenses. I plan to buy the Nikon mount for this camera and my AF100 so I can use my 50mm 1.8 and my 85mm 2.8 and my 28mm 2.8. My question is until I get the Nikon adapter what set up on the 14-140 lens would give me a decent amount of shallow depth of field? I know this lens is only a 4.0 on the wide end, and I know I will have to be close to the subject, or will I? do I use the shutter and if so what setting? I am shooting 24p 1080i cinema on the standard setting and I am in manual mode. I know this is not a fast lens and I know my manuals will be easier to get shallow DOF, I cannot figure it out on this camera, also what shutter speed do you recommend shooting at if I am shooting 1080i 24p?

thanks

Pretty much what you said- it's a very slow lens and a zoom so the opposite of what you want for the shallow DOF look. Best way to enhance would be ND filters so you go to more open apertures in bright sunlight and move further back from the subject so you can zoom in more and emphasize the more shallow appearance at the longer end of the focal length range. I can't recommend highly enough getting the Nikon adapter, your 50mm and 85mm will rock on it. Try this one- Fotodiox.

the 14-140 is so slow you cant do much with it in anything other than full blown daylight. get the adapter and im sure your perception of the camera will improve WILDLY.

noah, im being lazy here. can you point us to an online source for adapters for the gh2?

Get a ND or ND fader to cut down the amount of light going into the lens. Shutter speed should be 1/50th second - Aperture wide open. I dont agree that you cant do much with it except in full blown daylight. Last week outside, without a ND filter I was shooting at f11/16 at 160 ISO.... and I live in the UK not know for too much sun!

With your primes you will definately need NDs

Cheers
