Question for you..

hi, im new here and ive been lurking around these forums for a while just basicaly crying over how i dont have a dvx-100..what i want to know is how much each of you payed for your camera and how did you get the money to pay for it. Ive been going crazy for over a year now because im stuck with a really bad Hi-8 camera and i have over 30 different scripts and storyboards ive writing with my friend over the years and never get to use them :(....and i cant get a job because im 17 without a car or way of transportation to a job. I hate when people who know nothing about cameras or the dvx just go out and randomly buy one and it means like nothing to them or their parents just buy it for them :(....i know everything about every minidv camera on the market and im stuck with the junk...yeh i need to stop whining about this..back to the point..ive been wondering how much did you guys pay and how did u get the money

Re: Question for you..

I payed 3'700 for mine (ex tax). I got a loan out of the bank to pay for mine and I've been working full time ever since to pay for it, along with  a freakishly weird online shopping habit I have.

If you want a dvx really bad, you will get one. You just have to have the balls to get up and say: "hey, get this, i'm going to spend 3.5k on a cam". Like the nike advert says, just do it.

I must say though, I spend alot of money of stupid items that I don't need. I usually get fed up of them within a few days/weeks. I however am not one bit dissapointed with the dvx100a - If I had the choice of having my money back or still having my dvx, the dvx would still be here.

Re: Question for you..

i am a salesman and took one of my checks and bought it.. Then another thing came up and i had to pawn my omega watch for a couple of weeks to make it through till next payday.. lol..
If credit is good.. go to CITI finance or Household finance or American General and get one of those $5000 loans.. pay 150 a month and there ya go....Hope that helps.

I remember when i used to be a bailbondsman It was when cell phone bills were 400$ a month. Well i had a bad month or two and no bonds.. I had to decide well ... Do i pawn my GLOCK (firearm) and hope and pray for another bond or two?? Or do i rob a bank with it.. lol.. i chose to pawn it.. wouldnt you know though I had a skip a day or two later and had to go arrest him unnarmed.. man im glad im out of that business... lol

Re: Question for you..

I stopped eating out lunch everyday and basically just forced myself to buy it. Paid $3400 I think for the whole package and warranty and shipping (EVS of course). Wasnt a huge financial sacrifice as it was more prioritizing and just doing it instead of talking about it.

17. No car. What about the bus? What about a bike? What about a skateboard? What about getting a ride from you parents in the morning to the job or nearby? Its summer now right? You could work the next 2 months and have a camera by Senior year 1st semester.

Talk to your parents and tell them your goals and that you are willing to work for this and you need their help and guidance.

Man Im getting old.

ONe thing you will learn in life is if you want something bad enough you will figure it out. You cant sit back and say "Well, I cant get a job because...."

Re: Question for you..

yeh i was thinking about getting a job at a shopping center near by even though i have to walk around 2 miles to get there..its worth it for this camera. i was looking into financing options and it seems like a good deal. what do u think? there is a camera store near me called new york camera and video and i heard they have financing options and it would cost me around 100 a month...it sounds nice. it would be nice to have the camera now and be able to film during the summer like i intended too rather then saving for months. is this a good idea? keep in mind im only 17. my parents might do it in their name but i dont know yet.

Re: Question for you..

Hi Ben

Why dont you just register as Ben Nolan?

Financing can be dangerous. What starts out as a $3400 purchase at some ridiculous interest rate inevitebaly ends of costing you $7000 over the course of 5 years. The thing with financing is, they want you to make the minimum payment to incur interest charges. You can say "ill pay more than the minimum due; but you wont. No one ever does.

2 miles? Whats two miles? Get a bike and your there in 10 minutes and its good for you!

Id personaly stay away from a financing deal. Maybe get an advance from your parents? I know its tough waiting (Trust me I know). But there are other things to learn while you wait.

3400 is steap already. Dont finance!

Re: Question for you..

:(.....i was getting excited about this financing thing..but i duno now im having doubts. But saving 3400 dollars would take me soo long :(.....i already been shooting films with Hi-8 cameras and borrowing my freinds minidv cams..for like 2 years..if i have to wait like 5 more months..im gonna go insane..why cant i just be a spoiled rich kid :-/

Re: Question for you..

Why cant I be a porn star?

These are the questions of life. You will not go insane. You will just feel like you are going insane. Ask your parents to front you the cash or.......

Ask if they will contribute to the fund for chores you do or even extra chore you do to help them out

or

Get that job and bust your ass which will make you feel pretty damn good when that day comes that you worked for it and sacrificed.

Re: Question for you..

my parents are cheap bastards :-/...o well i guess ill just get the job and either save up or find out more information about the financing and see if its as bad as u said..or everyone in the forum could just donate 20 dollars to me and ill be able to get it ;D.... :-/

Re: Question for you..

Nice try.

Seriously; start thinking of every single way you can make cash (work, odd jobs, extra chores, bumming off relatives, selling crap you dont need or want, having a garage sale, giving blood)

Immediate Gratification is a tough one. But if someone just gave it you, you might not really appreciate it.

Re: Question for you..

yeh i guess ure right..but i thought financing was a really good idea because i could have the camera for summer filming and i can feel like im actually getting something out of working..i would be extatic everyday going to work if i knew i was going home to a dvx-100

Re: Question for you..

There's no way a 17 year old should be financing ANYTHING. Believe me, you'll regret it.

Stop going to the movies and put that $20 in the bank. Stop renting movies, buying video games, going to McDonalds, or whatever it is you spend your money on (I was once 17 too, and it's all a waste). Stick that money in the bank and you'll have your camera soon enough.

Re: Question for you..

I don't think you'd feel that way (about the financing)...you would at first...but not for long.

I'm 18, and I got my DVX a few months ago...but I didn't have the cash. So I borrowed money from my parents and and a friend (something NOT to do, my friend's cool about it but I felt bad owing him money). Anyways, it gets to a point where you KNOW that you have an awesome camera...and now you're just giving away money every couple weeks.

While I'm glad I did it (I made a killer movie in the winter, I *needed* the snow) I wouldn't reccomend it. Unless you've got a specific reason that you actually *need* the camera now, I think it would be much more rewarding to simply save up and then buy.

Re: Question for you..

I work A LOT! 12 hour days (I can prove it) and took a student loan out for the rest.

John was right about immediate gratification, work hard for it.

P.S. 17? That's too young to sell sperm I think...wait a year.

(IknowIknow...linecrossed)

Re: Question for you..

I too would recommend avoiding any financing "deals".

Just work hard, save money, and you'll soon have it in your hands.  Keep using your Hi-8 cam and your friends MiniDV cams to make your movies.  Think of it as "training".  Remember, a DVX will not make you immediately "talented".

The funny thing is, while instant gratification seems cool, and thinking about how great it would be to have what your want *NOW* is quite nice for daydreaming, working hard for something is often a rewarding experience in itself.  Add that to the payoff of getting your DVX in the end and you'll appreciate it all the more.

Not what you want to hear, I'm sure, but it's been true in my experience.

Re: Question for you..

Exactly my point and rings true. There is something in Owning something you actually worked and sacrificed for. Pride baby.

Re: Question for you..

It's graduation/Eagle Scout season again.  Every Eagle scout needs/wants a video photo montage done.  Every graduating student has to have a photo montage. Every father's day, someone wants a photo montage done.  Every mother's day they want these darn photo montages.  When I first got in the video business I used to do these things.  They always want 30 to 150 pictures set to some music.

The point is, get good at 'em, and then charge $295 each.  You'll have your DVX paid for, cash, within a couple of months.  All it takes is some patience to scan in bazillions of photos, and a good editing program that makes it easy (these were torturous to do with Premiere, but Vegas would make it a snap, with its built-in pan/scan/crop/zoom tool and automatic aspect ratio conversion).  Until you get good at it, it'll take you a couple of days for each, but so what -- it beats walking 2 miles to the grocery store to work for $5.15/hr.

Get artistic, have fun with it, make them watchable, add some slight motion to every photo so it's never boring and flat and stale... people LOVE these things, and the great thing is, they're almost always happy with them, because as long as they're looking at their loved ones on the screen, it's hard to do something they wouldn't like!
