Question For The Dvx Gods?

Question: With the Panasonic DVX100B system, will it record audio while shooting at 24P or do you need a separate audio recording device?

Brian

PS - Any information on a recommended Lav brand (audiotechnica someone said), model, price, and seller for shooting a doc would be appreciated?

The reason I ask is that a friend of mine said they were only able to record audio at 29.997...at 24p, they needed an additional audio recording device...but he wasn't sure which dvx model they were using...might have been the A model...so can you confirm this?

Thanks again,

Brian

Question For The Dvx Gods?

Hi...Im shooting a doc by myself with a Panasonic DVX100B...my friend tells me that I can't shoot at 24P and get audio without buying and connecting a separate audio recording device...is this true? He says that I can only record audio (without the separate device) in 29.997. Perhaps he is referring to previous Panasonic DVX models? Please, please, please, tell me the answer...and I hope he is wrong...

Thanks,

Brian

He's wrong. I believe 24P is 29.97 in all actuality... When you capture this footage you'll be capturing in 29.97. If your shooting in 24PA that is a different story, you should capture 24P Advanced @ a frame rate of 24P in your timeline. Note: I am not one of the DVX Gods however, I do know that there have been several docs shot with a straight DVX without a seperate audio device.

the audio should be the same regardless of the frame rate you use.

and the same means good. The only thing to make sure you have right is mics. Use lapel mics for interviews...thats for sure. Or a boom mic....something nearer to the subjects than an on camera shotgun. I just shot a documentary on 24p and the interview audio is bad...since i didnt do either of the two suggestions above.

You do not need to record audio to a separate device. That's not just wrong, it's asinine. Of all the ridiculous myths regarding 24p I've come across, that's probably the most mind-numbingly stupid one, ever.

24p is NOT 29.97, but it is recorded to mini-DV tape in a 29.97 stream -- not because of audio issues, but because the footage can only be recorded as DV, and that's always 60i in NTSC land.

The HVX records native 24p frames to the P2 and has no audio issues whatsoever. (True, it doesn't record sound in native mode when using overcranking or undercranking, but that's a completely different issue.)

wow is that guy wrong.

Audio on the DVX is top notch. as good as the HVX, and as good if not better than some DAT recorders.

Also, i think there is some cofusion about 24pA. 24pA is just a different pulldown cadence in the 60i stream. some people seem to think its recording 24p native. thats just not accurate. it just replicates an additional frame through the different cadence, leaving the origional 24 frames intact.

standard 24p is 2:3:2:3

24pA is 2:3:3:2:

the exra frame in the middle works out to keep the progresive frames together in the stream but its still 60i video.

All of the DVXs record interleaved audio to tape. If someone is setting up to record double-system sound, either their DVX is broken, or they want to use a recording device they find superior to the DVX's built-in audio solution.

Hi..I understand how 24p is still recording 29.97 and dropping frames through 2:3 pulldown but I don't know how that affects the audio...I would think that there would be some synching issues...???
