Question for my 2nd hard drive.

Hey guys..
I had a 2nd hard drive laying around that is a 7200rpm/60g and put it in my Dell computer which is daisy chained off my main c-drive. When I set up Vegas to use the c drive which has the OS on it along with Vegas, everything plays back fine.
THIS IS NOT MY MAIN EDITING SYTEM. Iam just using it to learn vegas while Bigstein is using the other. Now, When I set my disk management up to capture to the 2nd drive, and while in capture mode Iam dropping frames galore and pic is studerring. What do you think could be the problem?

Re: Question for my 2nd hard drive.

Sounds like a bad hard drive. 7200rpm is plenty fast enough for DV capture playback, so if it is having problems then the drive is probably bad. However, you might try reformatting the drive and trying again. Make sure that you have it set up properly as the slave drive and you might even check out PCpitstop.com and let it run a complete system diagnostic. It will tell you if your drive is behaving abnormally.

You might also try connecting it as a master (don't forget to change the jumper on the drive) on a separate IDE channel.
Hope this helps.

Make sure its running in UDMA mode as well in your adapter settings. even WINXP still screws this up sometimes.

Use HDtach to test your drive speed as well ,it will get you a good idea what the problem is.

Re: Question for my 2nd hard drive.

I ran into a similar problem. It was discussed at DVINFO.

Here's the solution that I posted there.

I finally found my Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools disk and used it to check the hard drive. It said that the drive had Ultra DMA support of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, but that the Ultra DMA Active was 0. I restarted my computer and ran setup (F2). I went into Drive Configuration, Primary Slave Drive. The drive type was set to Off, so I changed it to Auto. When I restarted my computer, DMA was running at 5 and I’ve been able to capture with no dropped frames.

Re: Question for my 2nd hard drive.

Phillip, will try that and see what happens. Thanks

Re: Question for my 2nd hard drive.

Phillip, I just did what you suggested and it WORKS!!
I shutdown computer and on the reboot, hit F2. toggled down to Slave drive and it was set to off. Changed it to auto and wala.....Its capturing fine and playing back fine. Thanks for everyones suggestions. I appreciate it.

Re: Question for my 2nd hard drive.

for optimum performance you should do as Kplo said and make it a master and not a slave. If you have another IDE available of course...

Re: Question for my 2nd hard drive.

Fred,
Doing that want affect my C: drive that has my OS and other programs ie..Vegas and so forth. And if so, I guess I can just go back to the F2 on bootup and set my video drive as the master and the C:drive as the slave and keep both of them in the auto mode.??
