Question for mac users

just a fast question for mac users, can the newest FCP handle hvx200 mxf files
at 720 natively and more important 1080 also? can it remove the pulldown from 108024PA natively or do you have to go somewhere else??

thanks guys

reason why I ask is because I might be making the switch pretty soon

FCP still doesn't handle MXF files natively, but I use Raylight and that has eliminated the need to Log and Transfer or convert the files to QuickTime before I can edit.

Even without Raylight, you view the MXF files in a log and transfer window as Kevin mentioned, pick the ones you want, even set in and out points and then they are trasnfered into FCP, still DVCproHD but now in a QT rapper.

Not as cool as dragging and dropping MXF into the timeline but still way better / easier than tape.

And yeah it will apply advanced pulldown for you on transfer.

man that is some BS, all this time I thought everyone praised the mac because how easy it was to edit mxf files from the hvx and now you're telling me that you cannot edit natively on FCP, now this is a surprize

Hmmm ... its integrated with P2 ... maybe that's what people talk about?

In a certain sense it trumps Vegas because at least it has a "native" log and transfer window. Vegas can edit MXF when you buy raylight. (or so I understand)

FCP can edit MXF when you buy raylight.

But really, you have to backup all your footage anyway since there's no tape archive. So when you use the log and transfer window you wind up with a QT copy in addition to the original MXF copy from the P2 card.

so how is the workflow different if you use raylight on a mac or if you dont? how does that affect your workflow?

I don't have raylight, but it allows you to drop MXF files right into your timeline.

You just skip the part where you change from the MXF wrapper to the QT wrapper.

Also my understanding is that you can keep some of the meta data from the card.

how long does this process take, the changing to the qt wrapper? on average say for a full 16 gb p2 card, all those clips

thanks

Well you can review in the field on a laptop instantly via the log and transfer window.

If you just import a card ... hmmm ... never really payed attention ... on my imac? 5 or 10 minutes? but you can be working while it does that in the background.

Depends- a Powerbook with PCMCIA slot is faster than say a P2 Drive or transferring to camera. My DVD might help you out- we explore multiple workflows for working with P2 material in FCP. We show Native MXF with Raylight as well as QuickTime into FCP- pros and cons for each.

ohh ok that is great news, I am guessing the majority of users here use the qt wrapper to edit in fcp right?

Yeah probably. I would love to have Raylight but I cannot afford it right now.

A lot of FCP users are like, "I don't get why I really need raylight with version 6 of FCP, I'm fine with the work flow"

And the people that have raylight say "you have no idea what you are missing"

But you do not have to have it to work in FCP. And the FCP workflow is still in a whole 'nother league from tape workflow.

ok now my next question, someone tell why a new macpro is so friken" expensive!! I mean deam, I spent about 1500 on a cpu for avid, but a macpro is no less than 2500, whats going on here?

well smaller with more form functionality is more $ right?

My new imac with similar juice to the mac book pro and a nice big glass monitor was only $1200.

But the "real" macs are mad expensive.

lol, I thought you were using shorthand for macbook pro ...

yeah big difference, my imac's a 6 cyl ford mustang, that thing's a ferrari

big difference between imac and macpro? pros cons?

Can't expand it with PCI cards is the biggest drawback and down the line the MacPro has more power. BUT...The new Imac's will be able to handle just about anything you could throw at it these days short of uncompressed 2k. If you don't plan on doing render intensive work and are mainly doing SD and compressed HD work, the imac will be more than enough for you.

I would say most people I know who shoot HD and edit on a mac absolutely use Raylight. Its a no-brainer and makes the post process totally painless.
