hi jan,

first, thanks for all your support on this board--it's great for panasonic to have this kind of voice giving advice on its' products.

so, i just recently bought an hpx170 and found that it has a fairly quiet, but audible intermittent mechanical 'groaning' noise. in a quiet room, i can hear it just holding onto to the camera. if there's louder ambient noise, i can hear it if i put my ear to the lens hood.

i brought the camera back to dealer to exchange. but they brought out on of their rental hpx and showed me that it too has the same noise...but i've also done research on this board and nobody else seems to have this issue (or at least the few who did respond didn't have a noise problem).

do you know if this is an issue with the hpx's? if so, is there a fix? if not, i should be eligible for exchange, correct?

thanks very much.

nope...everything is on manual, servo is off.

also, i did a sound check with sennheiser mounted on camera and mic definitely picks up noise--which is an issue for me since i do a lot of solo shooting/sound.

A groaning HPX170? First I have ever heard of this. Mine so far doesn't seem to make that sound but I have not had it in an extremely quiet room shooting yet. Is it only with the camera recording or just when its powered on or ?

I will take my 170 into a quiet room to listen. But let us know more details. Is it a continuous sound or intermitent?

I will let you know what I hear.

Dan

the sound occurs whenever the camera is powered on---both recording and non-recording.

the best way to describe it is as a continuous intermittent sound. there are brief moments (maybe 10-30 seconds) of silence. but aside from that it is an intermittent mechanical noise that goes for a while and then will sputter--sounds almost like a drive trying to start up and slowing down.

yeah, please let me know what you hear--i really want to figure out if it's on all hpx's or not.

thanks.

Have you tried switching off the OIS and see if that makes a difference, thats one of the few mechanical parts.

hi jan,

any thoughts on this?

you can hear the sound on my post entitled 'HPX170 groaning noise-vimeo vid...'.

thanks.
