Question for iMovie Users

So... one of my friends decided to buy the same HMC40 kit as me... with a few notable exceptions.

1. He uses iMovie on a Mac.
2. He refuses to read the f*cking manual.
3. Instead of simply copying clips off his card and saving them somewhere consistent, with some sort of organizational method, he captures them with iMovie in God-knows-what-format and has them stored in a default folder, with no backup method.

My dilemma is this: I'm working on a project, and need some clip from him. After talking to an iMovie user who works strictly with SD footage, I was able to help him find the clips he needed on his hard drive, which were then sent to me via DropBox... with no file extension. I've tried putting .mts, .m2ts, and .mov as extensions, and none of them work, except for sound, in Vegas, VLC, or MPC (MPC doesn't even play sound). I'm pretty sure that they're Quicktime files of some sort, because checking the properties in Vegas shows that the audio uses the QT7 plugin; I'm doubtful that they're currently encoded as AVCHD, because the files appear to be nearly uncompressed (they're similar in size to Cineform .avis I've encoded). Additionally, Cineform won't recognize the files, so I can't even convert them to that format!

So, what format are these files likely to be in, and how can I convert them to something I can actually use in Vegas or with Cineform?

Thanks!

Here's the error I get with VLC:

Code:
[/COLOR][COLOR=white]No suitable decoder module: [/COLOR][COLOR=white]VLC does not support the audio or video format "icod". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

Well, after some Googling... this isn't going to work. At all. And since he can't RTFM or follow simple instructions (ex: "send me the original .mts files"), I'm going to have to drive an hour, convert them on his computer, and then put them on my own.

*sigh*

I met up with him at a Taco Bell (his idea... not mine). It was a clusterf*ck. After an hour of working with him unsuccessfully, it turned out that the clips were still on his camcorder. *facepalm*

I have to admit, it sounded like a PICNIC-type (Problem in chair, not in computer type) error with your remote shooter from the start... lol ;-)

Were you able to get the footage in the end??

Yes. He had his camera with him, and I had a card reader. He told me that he's been formatting the card, but what I think he means is that he's been deleting clips.

so is there no luck in converting this icod format then? I'm in a similar position, and I can't believe Apple would be so stupid as to refuse to allow icod to ever be converted to a different format.
