i'm shooting a spot with my hvx200, haven't shot anything with it for broadcast yet. wondering which format i should shoot it in(10801 24p with pulldown, 720 24p?) i just wonder if shooting 720 24p will give me any problems if a station broadcasts it in SD ntsc. Or should i shoot 720 24p? Any spot shooters for broadcast out there? what are you guys or gals doing?

at my station we can center cut an HD source so make sure you have all your text and important information inside the SD NTSC safe areas. We're an NBC affiliate so we transmit 1080i. That's how we request HD commercials to be sent to us.

I do lots of commercials. I shoot 720 24PN. And letterbox an SD mixdown for delivery. Our stations, as many do, have HD content and SD local commercial playback servers.

I make 720 x 480 SD at 30fps from my 720 23.976 Avid timeline.

If shooting in HD, use your markers on the LCD to keep anything important in the 4:3 frame, and then remember you'll lose another 10% on most TV sets (applies especially to text and graphics).

When pricing the job, don't forget to ask what the delivery method is. You might find yourself spending hundreds to have the material taken from an AVI on CD to the preferred format that a particular station wants. Your client may assume that you'll deliver to multiple stations that may all require different delivery mediums or formats. Not many of us have a BetaCamSP deck for example.

You'll also need to include timecode, bars, tone, black, and slate for one minute at the begining and then five seconds of black and then bars for one minute total at end. Different opinions on how to do it, but that format works for me.

You should also add a "broadcast legal" color filter in your NLE before final render. Use the convservative settings and no setup and you should be fine.
