Question about viewfinder

This might seem like a really dumb question so forgive me.... I have heard some minor complaints about the viewfinder on the JVC (I am assuming that it is a color lcd?) I am not a big fan of these viewfinders - I have a DVX100A. I am more acustomed to the larger, black and white viewfinder from the 2/3" cameras. Would it be possible to replace the finder on the JVC with one of these larger ones? Or will the HD picture not translate to a SD finder?

The reason I ask is that I have a viewfinder from my old Sony DSR-500 (The camera was destroyed on an expedition to the Sea of Cortez). I had the crazy idea that were I to get the JVC camera, I might be able to modify my finder to fit on the new camera.

I don't understand why all the new cameras use lcds for their finders. Is it more cost-effective? I had an old Hi-8 camera long ago that had a regular B&W finder and it was great.

Camera manufacturers seem to think that everyone who buys a "prosumer" level camera wants a colour viewfinder, so the way to do it cheaply is LCD, and it sucks.
Personally I prefer good 'ole black & white CRT viewfinders. I rent the FU-1000 whenever I can for my XL2, but JVC hasn't released a B&W CRT VF yet. The VF plug on the HD100 has 20 pins. What does your VF plug have? I doubt it will work, but you might be able to find a saavy engineer to wire it for you.

I'm sure it won't be long before a third party builds a universal B&W CRT VF that plugs into the video out on the camera. At least then you could have the flip-out LCD and VF on at the same time.

My vf has 20 pins also. 5 across and 4 down in a perfect rectangular pattern. Hmm...I wonder if it would work? Does it matter that it is not an HD vf?

The only problem is that you will lose the Focus Asist function, a colored VF is required for it. I also prefer B/W VFs, but this colored TFT isn't that bad... you just get used to it.
