question about using 35 mm adapters (re: iris and ND filters)

Can someone clarify for me how the inter-play works between the SLR still lens's iris and the DVX100A's iris? A can stop down my SLR lens. And I can stop down my DVX100A iris. Is one preferable over the other? Can I play with them both to get the look I want?

Similarly, there is a built-in ND filter on the DVX100A. But I've read people are using matte boxes so they can mount an ND filter on their SLR lenses. Why would I need an ND filter on the lens if my camera has one inside? Are there drawbacks to using the ND filter inside the camera?

i'm not sure about the iris, but using a ND filter on the mattebox can allow better control than using the in-cam only ND's. You only have two choices with the in cam option, you have many more using 4x4 filter glass
