Question about time-lapse - frame doubling

There's probably a number of other places this could go...but I know the people here in the GH1 forum the best.

Has anybody seen this? I think it's amazing:

My question -- I downloaded the mpeg4 file locally, and it looks like they purposely doubled the frames in a 2:3 pattern. So it's like AA:BBB:CC:DDD and so forth. To give that time-lapse, but kind of stuttery effect.

As far as tilt-shift goes, I'm planning to pull off something similar. I don't think I'll want to repeat their 2:3 frame repeat, but I might...I'm wondering if anybody has any idea how to easily accomplish that, without manually duplicating images before dropping them into an image sequence.

Well since nobody had a solution I had to go find my own.

I'll put my info here for the rare chance that it might help somebody else later on.

I am on a Mac. I can make time lapse videos by pointing Quicktime at a folder of sequentially named files.

On the elegancy scale I'd rate this a solid 7.5. It's probably not the most elegant way to do this, but I can think of a lot more tedious way too.

Starting with my folder of images, I used a series of searches to pull the even-numberd images into 1 folder, and the odd-numbered images into another folder. I couldn't figure out how to get finder to let me find the files that ended in 0.jpg OR 2.jpg, etc so I had to run individual searches for each even and each odd number.

After I separated the files into folders, I duplicated the "even" files 1 time. I duplicated the "odd" files 2 times. I threw everything back into a single folder and ran a batch-rename job to renumber the files starting at 1.

Point Quicktime at the newly renamed files...

Effect achieved.

Here you go, and I just watched it again.

FWIW -- I got my timelapse footage. The building I was on made for a bit too high of an angle for the Photoshop Miniature Faking action to work properly, and I didn't like the Disney 3:2 repeating pattern on my footage either...so I ended up with straight timelapse! Another time on another project.
