Question about the 170 SDI out (BNC) connection.

Hi

I got a question about the SDI (BNC) out on the HPX-170. I thought that the SDI was it's own special (HD) connection and wouldn't work on a normal analog BNC. (I'm a beginner here)

On page 80 in the manual, there's a diagram "Conneting External Units" - "Video Deck (Dubbing)". I don't know of any VCR's that have SDI? According to that diagram, it's lumping the componet, composit and BNC all into 1? So I'd assume the BNC connector would output whatever the input requires?

So, If I happen to shoot SD 480i/60 with an external SD monitor. Could I use the BNC out of the camera into the monitor?

I got a shoot this coming weekend tht requires SD to match with some video I took a few yers ago. Normally I'd be shooting 720p/60 HD. I don't have an HD monitor yet so I figured I could just use my old iKan V7000 monitor.

I'm lost here!

You have SDI and Composite output confused. SD/HD-SDI is a serial connection and will not work on any composite input. Only SDI. High end decks and monitors usually have an SD/HD-SDI input/output.

You can connect to a composite monitor via the composite output.

The 170 will show you a down converted image via the composite output.

You can always rent an HD monitor. Then you can can connect via SDI and have embedded audio or connect via component.

Thanks
The manual was a bit confusing showing all the connections graphically, but not specifing. I sort of figured what you said but!!! ;-)

Thanks for clearing the matter up for me.

I'm holding off getting an SDI HD monitor because we're investigating getting some kind of backup digital recorder that has SDI so we can backup HD recordings.

I do have the nNovia digital recorder and that will do MXF files. We're just thinking if maybe we can avoid the Log and Transfer in FCP. These particualr jobs are continuous shooting for 1 hour up to maybe 3 hours.

This is probably the last job I'm going to shoot SD 480i/60. Since I got the 170 now. I don't want to lug that big heavy Sony DSR-250 and SD is all this company's computers will handle, plus this film's got to match what I short before there. It's still, I believe, it's going to be a much better picture though than if I shot the 250.

Thanks again Steve
