Question about shooting 16:9 in 480i/p

Having just got the HVX a day ago, I haven't had any time to put the camera through its paces or shoot any footage, but have been perusing the manual and realizing how much new stuff there is to learn on this cam vs. the DVX.

One thing that stood out as odd in the manual was the description of aspect ratios when shooting 480i: Normal (4:3), Letterbox, and squeeze, which seems to imply that to shoot 16:9 in SD, you either shoot 4:3, or faux 16:9 via letterbox, or 16:9 via squeeze, which doesn't make sense since the camera's imager is supposed to be native 16:9 (which it shoots in the HD modes)... so what's up with this?

Is shooting 16:9 in 480i/p mode making use of the entire imager? And if so, why is the squeeze mode included?

What's up is that "squeeze" is true native 16:9. Confusing for those migrating from the DVX, I know, but it's the way it is. "squeeze" = native 16:9 on the HVX.

Ah, good, that's what I was wondering too. So, the HVX does not stretch a cut image to 16:9 and then squeeze it, it uses the full size of the chip to do the 4:3 squeeze, like with the DVX with the 16:9 adapter, just without the focusing hassle.

Confusing, indeed. So is anything actually being squeezed in squeeze mode?
