I will be getting an external mic with mini-plug connection to HMC40 (not XLR). Reading Barry's book and HMC40 manual I think I understand settings but before I make a mistake and foul up a bunch of video I want to confirm settings with forum. As I understand it steps would be as follows:
1. In main menu or quick menu "Mic Level Sel" set to MANUAL (not Fix)
2. In main menu "Mic ALC" set to either ON or OFF (ON will clip audio if sound gets too loud)
3. Mic will have a dead cat wind screen so turn "Wind Cut" OFF??
4. In FUNCTION NAVI menu select Mic icon and adjust input level--for recording race cars any suggestions for input level starting point (i.e. 0 or -3 db or??) Monitor "audio level meter" but should I set input level to generally try to hit the 0 db mark?
5. Monitor sound via headphones plugged in to headphone jack on camera to make sure I am recording sound
Any other "setting/monitoring/make sure something else is set properly" suggestions would also be appreciated
