Question about purchasing DVX

Hey Everyone,

I'm new to the forum, so...hello.

By the end of October I'll be able to afford the DVX100a and will be purchasing it.

I know the HVX will be out shortly after that, but I , nor any of my family/friends have an HDTV, nor would I be able to afford an SP2 card to record to it anyway.

My question though is, after reading about the 3 different shooting modes of the DVX (4:3, 4:3 letterbox, and Squeeze) I would like a quick piece of advice/confirmation.

More than likely for my first projects with the camera I won't be editing with an external TV monitor, I know it's bad practice, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

All of my TV's are 4:3, but I would like everything I film to be 16:9, when on DVD.

What shooting mode is best?

I figure that if I were using an external TV monitor, I would shoot in 4:3 letterbox mode, then use Photozoom to upres to 16:9 once I have a finished product that I can re-import and immediatly export to DVD (no further editing).

However, if I am not using a 4:3 monitor to edit, would it be ok to shoot in Squeeze mode, use a 16:9 template in Premiere or Vegas, the export to DVD. Since i'll have to use my computer for video preview, there wouldn't be any distortion, when editing color correction and what not.

Am I on the right track?

Thanks.

With or without an external TV monitor you can shoot in 4:3 and up resize for 16x9 (probably more resolution than squeeze), but squeeze does a good job. I saw a video did in squeeze in a plasma TV and it was fine.

Good luck and welcome,
Ulisses
