Hey guys
I need help with something here:
I'm going to be getting a DVX100a in February, and I've been doing a lot of research on this camera, but something has come up. I live in the States but I am planning to move to Brazil and do some shooting there. This is a permanent thing, ok. I want to buy the camera here because it's so much cheaper. Anyway, I've come accross the NTSC/PAL thing. Could someone help me out with what is the best way to go about this? Should I just buy a PAL Dvx, but then not be able to use it here in the States? Or is there such a thing as a converter that I could use and just switch it back and forth whenever I'm in either countries?? Does anyone have any experience or wisdom in the matter? HELP!!

YES!! That's what I was thinking! Then I can just burn my material to DVD on PAL setting, right? It just doesn't make any sense to me to buy a DVX100a PAL seeing as how something like this could be done.

There aren't too many high quality options to go NTSC <> PAL on your home computer. Natress may have soem plugisn for this but it's a coversion process. If all your output was going to be for one taerget format then cosider getting the camera that matches oterwise you're goign to have to convert everytime.
What other equipment or services are you going to need? What if you need to rent a camera or get a one format monitor? If your equipment matches the standard of the country you're in then it's easier.

I think it depends what the final medium of your work is and if you are working with other people. The advantage of NTSC is that it's playable without problems on most PAL DVD/TV setups but hardly any NTSC setups play PAL DVDs. Conversion is possible but you will always loose quality so if you plan to work mostly in Brazil, maybe work on projects with people from Brazil for TV etc. I'd recommend a PAL DVX (which btw are sold by B&H for the same price as the NTSC ones)

I never heard of PAL M and I'm pretty sure there is no other DVX than regular NTSC and PAL. Do you have any specs on PAL M?

I read an article (lost it unfortunatelly, can't link it here, but will search for it again) where PAL-M is something that was invented for Brazil only, and that it's not even compatible with the European PAL. I wonder if there's any truth to that. In any case, I am leaning towards getting the NTSC version anyway, because I have some friends down there who I send material in NTSC all the time and they say they can watch it in their computers and DVD/VCR players. Ist that the same thing? I think that eventhough Brazil has invented their own system, it has "evolved" to the point where it's compatible with the US. Any comments? I might just be waaay off here....

PAL-M is indeed the official Brazilian CTV broadcast standard. It is exactly like NTSC (525/60i/3.58...) . The only difference is that the SC (3.58) is encoded in PAL . For the digital transfer (IEEE1394), color encoding is not involved, so this remains fully NTSC compatible. For analog output I suppose that all receivers in Brazil have multistandard color decoders, so fully NTSC compatible. Bottom line: don't go for (European) PAL (625/50i/4.43..) if you want to avoid problems.

Hi everybody
I decided to buy DVX-100BE (PAL) and I found on the internet another version - DVX 102BE. Are there any differences?? I'm confussed a little bit and your answer should help me to decide which one to buy. Sorry for my English - I'm from Europe Czech Republic.
