question about Marker On

I was testing the marker on feature. What percentage is considered to be at a good lighting level? I was testing this in a forest and I noticed it varies greatly. Obviously in the shadow, the percentage is around 20-30ish and in the light on the grass, around 77 to 99 up arrow. Should I try to get an average? Or maybe stick to zebras instead? thanks

Re: question about Marker On

For what you describe... I would use the Zebras.

Personally, I rarely use the 'marker on' feature. When I do it is mostly as a means to reinforce my exposure decision on the talent's face prior to a take.

Re: question about Marker On

ok thanks, one more question. Should I use zebra 100 or 80 to check for hot spots?

Re: question about Marker On

I think you'll get different responses to this one...

I usually leave mine at 100 IRE for general purposes, but 80 IRE is often preferred for checking skin tones. Of course, different skin tones will need slightly different maximum/best exposure settings.

This opens a whole can of worms as it is more about how you interpret those zebras...

What part of your subject are you exposing for?...

What kind of look are you going for? (blownout skies/silhouetted subject, day/night scene, bright & cheery or dark & sinister, etc.)...
