Question about HDV

Thanks for the help. One question off that. How would I go about transcoding an entire sequence in DNxHD? I like compressing files from a reference when I can, and I am sure it would be better than exporting a self-contained QT file?

Highlight the sequence in the bin right click (PC) and select transcode/consolidate. A pop up box will appear giving your options to select the flavor of DNxHD, audio, etc.

Regarding the quality difference between QT ref and a self contained QT, it would depend on the codec choice. If you export a self contained QT using the "same as source" option the quality would be identical. The only differnce is the file wrapper (MXF vs. QT). That said, for compression I prefer to use QT ref with Sorenson. What's not to love about fast export and small file size? A self contained QT would be helpful when your done with the project and need a master source file for compression. Obviously QT ref files aren't of much use once you delete the original files.

Ok so, I'll have to do this AFTER I finish my edit? I can edit with the MPEG files and then transcode after I am finished, right? So I don't have to transcode more than I need, since it takes some time.

You can try. I found Avid to be very sluggish with non-Avid media types. Including H.264...MAINLY H.264. ProRes was speedy, but camera native formats...not so much.

Depends on how nice and easy you want your edit to be.

Hey everyone,

I'm going to be editing a project shot with a Canon XH-A1, and I was wondering what the process was for bringing the footage into Avid, and what project type I should choose.

Thanks!

For example it would be:

1440x1080i - 23.976 - HDV
1440x1080i - 29.978 - HDV
1440x1080i - 60i - HDV

It should capture or be able to be drag and dropped into a bin with m2t files. Preferrably you can capture the tapes manually but since you say they will be on a HD you can easily just use the m2t files from HDV split. That's what I do.

I work with HDV footage quite a bit...if you have any probs I'll try to take a screen cap of the settings I use.

Hope that helps.
