As long as the power is on and a tape is in the machine, the hour meter is running. IF the power is one and no tape is in the machine, the hour meter doesn't run.
I fell asleep and left my camera on with a tape in the machine, and when I woke up the next day the camera was dead with about 5 hours added to the meter. However, I've never used standby mode so I can't say if that stops the meter.
On many jobs I've shot 1 tape spread out over a day, with the camera powered on most of the time, and have had 4-5 hours added to the meter by the time I get home.
I also don't review my tapes in the field or use my DVX as a deck, and over the 18 months I've owned my camera I've shot about 45 tapes and have accumulated 130 hours to the heads, for about 3 hours on the meter for every tape shot, on average. That's with no rewinding or usage as a deck, just recording.
ETA: Now, I have no clue how Panny has set up the hour meter, if it goes off of time or revolutions of the heads or what. Alot of commercial generators only add like 15 minutes to the meter for every hour of run time when at low idle, maybe panny has it so it adds less time when the power is on and a tape is in the machine, but it isn't recording. I'm very curious, come to think of it.
I know alot of times I'll pull my dvx out and play with it without a tape in the machine just so the hours don't rack up. I've gotten into the habit of removing the tape unless I'm absolutely about to shoot something.
