question about dvx100ae

tabcon

New member
hi guys, i went today to a panasonic distributor in austria to check out the dvx100ae (PAL VERSION) with a friend of mine, I own a ntsc 1,

Ive noticed immediatly that the menu had some very weird flickering problem wich my dvx100a doesnt have.
The distributor told us "they never notice"??? ( you could see it even at a external output monitor and the view finder )

The image looked a little bit flickery too at some edges,
I wanted to know if anyone knows about any of this kind of issues with the pal version,
is it standard? can u fix it?

is it the +100 lines of rez that cause this problem?
please help me out guys!

thx in advance
greetings

i have the dvx100ae. never really noticed the flickering you're talking about. or maybe i am just not looking carefully enough? if there's a flicker, it's not too obvious, that's for sure.
The image looked a little bit flickery too at some edges
on the LCD? which edges?

I was there this morning with tabcon at the panasonic distributor,

The LCD menu and View finder menu is totally unsharp, almost crispy,
a lot of the displayed information was slightly distorted by a flicker under it,
I can not remember exactly wichone but overall the image was very shacky of the menu,
even on a external monitor.

The image seamed to be grainier then usual ( gain was not on )
and the venetian blinds behind, table edges, everything that had a corner seamed to be very pixerated.

I just was comparing it to my dvx100A ( ntsc ) and I saw a big difference immediatly, of a not as nice and clean & clear image as the ntsc has, starting at the display.....

the strange thing is they showed me two dvx100ae cameras, and both looked the same??
maybe some magnetic interfierence at the show room? I dont know, I just wanted to know if anyone has a comparable phenomena on their pal dvx before I "give the greenlight to tabcon".

greetings

That sounds strange and definitely shouldn't be there. I haven't seen this behaviour on our cameras (PAL also).

are you sure the EVF wasn't on? that's actually something the standard dvx100 didnt have. a button on the back , left side, which enhances the edges to help focusing.

i was checking mine carefully. if you really look closely on the LCD you can see a tiny tiny flickering on the menu items words, when there are thin orizontal lines. but not significant, thats for sure. and that doesnt change with the evf on/off.
no flicker on the image itself though

My Theory. The DVX100AE is 25P. You're used to watching NTSC, which is 60i. The sales force didn't realize the flickering because they're used to PAL, they live down under. You noticed it because you shoot NTSC and you're used to NTSC, so in relation to NTSC yea, PAL looks flickery. I noticed the flickeryness too when I accidently got a PAL camera. The pixelation my be because of thick/thin line?

Secretpickle, no offence, but your theory is totally wrong. PAL is 50i. Mybe you can see the camerain 25p, but that doesn't make it more flickery than 100AP in 24p. Or 30p. There's NO difference you can see between PAL and NTSC in 50/60i or 24/30/25p.

ehm, actually I never shoot 60i, I shoot pretty much everything at 24p..
and I was looking at it at 25p... I didnt think it had that much difference..

flickering? ´= normal phenomena in europe?`
can anyone confirm
( tabcon wants a cam ( FAST ) )

greetings

Not sure. The DVX is 60i in NTSC, 50i in PAL. Whether you're shooting 24p or 25p or 30p or 50i or 60i, it makes no difference to the LCD screen -- it's still going to get updated at 50hz (in PAL cameras) or 60hz (in NTSC cameras).

NTSC users who watch 50hz PAL television can definitely see a flicker. I have a PAL/NTSC switchable monitor here, and when first putting it in PAL mode, it's noticeably flickery. That flicker goes away after a while, which probably means my eyes just get used to it.

But the LCD isn't an interlaced display, so theoretically it shouldn't flicker at all, right? Well, not necessarily. I tried an experiment once where I wanted to see if the LCD just displayed one field, and not both. I made a JPG of interleaved white and black lines and then output that to DV. I figured if the LCD was showing only one field, I should either see a solid sheet of white, or a solid sheet of black, right? Well, in actuality, what I saw was a wildly flickering alternating black/white screen but not fully black & fully white, it was like some parts of the screen were more solid than others. But it was all flickering at an incredibly fast rate, probably 60hz. If any experiment ever qualified for needing a warning about potentially introducing epileptic seizures, this experiment was the one.

So I'm not sure exactly what the LCD is doing, but it does try to display the entire frame (even though it doesn't have enough resolution to). -- what I guess I'm getting at is, it seems that it does show alternating fields at a high scan rate. And so maybe an NTSC user *would* be able to discern a PAL unit's 50hz refresh rate, even on the LCD?

Or maybe it was just a bad camera?

i notice a flicker when i change the scene file fro 4 to 5, (interlaved to progresive) but thats normal...... can you send picutres?

Just read the thread....My DVX100AE is with me eversince Feb 2004. I have frankly....and fortunately...never noticed ANY such issue.
