Question about dumping P2 to HDD

I read that you can dump P2 to HDD via FW (host mode) only 15 times, so does this mean that for my 8G card a HDD bigger than 120G is a waste?

In other words two 120G would be better than one 240G HDD??

Actually if you don't have an 8gb card even 120gb is too much as when using firewire mode you can only dump 60gb's (120gb with 8gb cards) worth of footage and it's actually the number of FAT32 partitions you can have on one disk that limits you.

So yes using two separate FW disks is the only choice you have. so its: 2x60gb for 4gb P2 cards and 2x120gb for 8gb P2 cards

Pretty much, the HVX creates a partition for each P2 card image, up to 15 partitions on a single disk. This strikes me as an odd limitation, I would hope a firmware upgrade in the future would allow more partitions to be created. Curious how the P2 Store has a similar limitation :)

As a speculation aside, I bet a firmware programmer decided to use 4 bits (1111 binary = 15 base 10) as the partition allocation map :badputer:

Actually, from what I'm told, the 15 partition limit is actually a factor in standard ATA hard drives, rather than the device itself.

A nice firmware upgrade would be to have the camera create folders, rather than partitions.

Yes, that would be fine with me, or use NTFS rather than FAT32, or something! But to be fair, the merger of IT and Camera Design is still in its infacy...
