question about build quality

if people could answer questions on

build quality

quality control

and what level of plastic is on the camera

The quality of the construction is almost top notch. The body itself is cast magnesium or aluminum, and the viewfinder is plastic.

At NAB I was very concerned about the viewfinder...at the time they had been (over)handled, and were a little loosey-goosey. The unit I used the other week, the viewfinder seemed much sturdier even though it's plastic. My only issue with switches is that the pots that control peaking and VF brightness seem lightweight. All of the other switches/button on the cam seem first-rate.

Overall, the solidness of the cam is a fair bit ahead of the DVX, and even a notch above an FX-1.

All in all it shouldn't be so difficult....

take the XL1 viewfinder. The actual LCD is only half a square centimeter. They should be able to place four of these side by side to get a nice resolution, and the only need a less strong focussing glass....

It doesn't seem to be a $10.000 technology-thing....

i just laid my hands on one for half an hour... and i like it.
its a mini camera... almost like a little brother to a typical eng style camera,
i have to admit it was lighter and smaller than i expected, which is a good thing.
the lens in particular is very very small compared to half inch and two thirds inch lenses.
which is interesting.
not very wide at all when shooting unfortunately, but very easy to focus and easy to use.
set up is nice
and the build quality is more than acceptable
they'll sell a lot of these

the white balance seemed off under flourescents that usually would read a 4300 or so it read a 3400, and the screen actually looked off in the colour viewfinder... that said it wasn't hooked up to a monitor so who knows what it actually looked like.

bottom line its a winner.
