Question about a lens

Wish I were banned.
This is such a stupid question, but I can't find info about it. I know the answer is probably all over the web but I can't find it.

Anyway...

I got a Nikon 50mm lens used, and it doesn't fit on the D90. The D90 has a little black button that sticks out right outside the mount and it's not allowing the lens to snap in tight. I had heard that all Nikon lenses made since 1970 work on all Nikon cameras.

This is the first still lens that I've ever purchased other than the kit lens.

from link
1) DX AF NIKKOR: All functions possible
2) D-/G-type AF NIKKOR (excluding IX NIKKORlenses): All functions possible (excluding PC Micro- NIKKOR)
3) AF NIKKOR other than D-/G-type (excluding lenses for F3AF): All functions except 3D-Color Matrix Metering II possible
4) AI-P NIKKOR: All functions except Autofocus, 3D-Color Matrix Metering II possible
5) Non-CPU AI NIKKOR: Autofocus not supported. Can be used in exposure modes A and M but exposure meter does not function. Electronic range finder can be used if maximum aperture is 5.6 or faster; Color Matrix Metering and aperture value display supported if user provides

hope it helps
if not specify the lens model

It has to be an AI or newer lens.

If it's a PRE-AI or NON-AI lens, then you will break your camera.

Check the silver metal coupling prong on the lens next to the aperture ring, does it have 2 holes in it or is it a solid metal prong?

CORRECT AI LENS: (has 2 holes on the prong):

anyone know if nikon E series lens will work with it?

Edit:

NM, answered my own question, they are compatible.

no, the aperture ring itself. but yeah you need to remove or reverse the tab too since it's mounted the part you're filing off.

don't remove anything from the camera, it's the lens you need to modify. the "tab" mentioned is the one on the lens, and it can be safely removed. it's just there for backwards compatibility. if you have a camera made after 1970 you don't need it.
