Question About 1/2in Lenses

Hello everybody
I have been reading this forum for a long time and absolutely love all the fantastic info contributed. I recently purchased the HD100u and absolutely love it. I did have one dead pixel but JVC support helped me fix it over the phone. So this brings me to my question. I am a former Canon XL1/XL2 user and have always loved being able to switch between lenses, which attributed to my choice in purchasing the HD100. I must say that I am kind of unhappy with the CA on the lens and was wondering if I purchased the 1/3in to 1/2 in adaptor and a lens like the Fuji S17x6.6, what kind of quality hit would I take? Also since I shoot half in DV and the the other half in HDV, would this be a worthy purchase anyway? Lastly, is there any kind of magnification factor mechanically adapting a 1/2in lens to a 1/3in camera (like the EF to XL adaptor)? Once again, thanks for all the info.

Debatable. Ostensibly the 1/2" lens wouldn't deliver full high-def resolution, but the "HD" lens on the JVC is no gem -- the chromatic aberration and edge softness is not pleasant at all. The 1/2" lens would likely suffer none of that. Could it be possible that the picture would even look better with the 1/2" lens? I don't know, and I'd love to test it to find out.

Well, no, there's no "magnification" factor, you just have to understand that you won't get the same field of view as you would have gotten if it was attached to a 1/2" camera. But the lens you're talking about, a 17x6.6, wouldn't be much longer at all than the stock lens. The stock lens is 16x5.5, for a total focal range of 5.5 to 88mm. The 1/2" lens under discussion would have a total focal range of 6.6 to 112. So everything from 6.6 to 88 mm would have the exact same field of view between those two lenses. The 1/2" would provide a lot deeper telephoto reach, but to get an equivalent wide-angle you'd need a 0.8x wide-angle adapter to match the widest field of view of the stock lens.

Thank you for the info. I think I may pick up that lens, I shoot a lot content with people against white backdrops and the CA really sticks out horribly. Once again thanks for the lens information, if and when I get the adaptor and lens Ill post my findings.

It would be most illuminating to hear your findings. Remember though, I'm just guessing -- it may turn out that the lens looks horrible on the HD100. We just don't know. So if you are comfortable being our "guinea pig", we'd love to hear your report.

After seeing what Matteo was able to do with the Sony FX1 and a regular B4-mount lens, though, I'm pretty optimistic...
