Quality Shooting

After a little research I came up with this ...I'd get better image quality if I shoot in 24p standard or F5 and capture and edit in 30p then I would if I shoot in 24p advanced and capture and edit in 24p then transfer back to 30p, unless of course I was definitely going to transfer to film? Does this sound right to you? Also what would be the correct starting settings in normal mode? I'm going to be shooting under bright sunlight with medium tree shade?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Quality Shooting

Well you could shoot in 24p advanced, edit in a 24p timeline and make a 24p DVD. There's nothing wrong with that.

Re: Quality Shooting

Personally, I'm a fan of the 24fps timeline. But yeah, you could edit normal 24p at 29.97fps and as long as you didn't use any filters, could send it back to the camera at 29.97fps with no generational loss. Then again, if your computer is fast enough and your NLE supports it, you could edit 24pA at 24fps, then sent the footage back to your camera with standard 24p pulldown and no generational loss as well, I believe. If you make a DVD this will result in a better image, as well.

Personally I see no reason to avoid the 24fps timeline; it's a better environment to edit in and if your NLE suppots 24pA, very simple to set up.

I have no idea what scene settings you should start with, f5 mode is a good place to start (although change pulldown schemes if you decided to shoot 24pA). I like to keep detail at -2 or lower at all times and master ped at -6 or lower at all times when I want a dramatic look and have good light. Other than that, everything changes depending on the shot. Just mess around with all the settings, the ND filters, etc. until you find something that looks good to you; it should only take a couple minutes. And underexpose a little if you have to to keep the sky from being blown out, although you may have to change what hour of the day you shoot to avoid blowing out the sky (cine_gamma_d is my favorite gamma setting for outdoor shooting, btw. but you'll get noise in dark areas)

Re: Quality Shooting

Great so this is what i'm going to do...Shoot and edit in 24p Advanced, make a 24p DVD and shoot in squeeze mode, I like that option because I can use a variety of different lense options. I read somewhere that the quality of 24p DVD when played on a plasma or DLP projector with a progressive scan DVD player is a huge improvement compared to 30fps.

Thanks for all your help!!!

Re: Quality Shooting

..it shouldn't be any higher quality, only at 24P rather than 30P.

Unless of course because you're saving the space on the DVD, you can use a higher bit rate...but same bit rate should equal same quality, regardless if its 24 or 30P...
