Quality of camera mic

Hey, I'm amazed with this site, what a wonderful resource...

I'm doing some documentary work over the summer in Mongolia and the university I'm working with is giving me a dvx100 to shoot with. I've only used the camera a few times on some short films so I definitely have some questions about it...

Most of the time I'm going to be doing interviews with wired/wireless lavs, however for in the field is the standard mic that comes with the camera satisfactory? There will be occassions where I'll be recording music performances, speeches, and sound out on the wind-swept steppe and I'm not sure if I should cut into the university's budget to pick up a Sennheiser shotgun or not.

Thanks for your time.

Re: Quality of camera mic

The on board mic on this camera is absolute junk. definately concider buying a mic for it. If you have dialog to record out in the field, the audio will be pretty much useless.

Re: Quality of camera mic

Its not total Junk, in fact its better than any other onboard mic in the prosumer class. Its just not as good as a good shotgun or Lav will get you.

Re: Quality of camera mic

I'v been using the camera mount and an external SuperLux CM-h8a. The superlux is awesome (and cheap) picks up a pin dropping in the next county.. -->**but the internal is pretty good**:) ( this is based on the previous junk i was using) last night i used the internal and the external two get the shot you would be hard pressed to tell the difference in quality(this was an indoor shoot and i forgot my wireless so i improvised with the two. i was completely satisfied) I just had to have them speak a little louder get a better pick up.. just watch the meters and you should be fine.. i have also used internal mic outside when doing moving shots not quit as good, but not bad.. do some test shots and see b4 you go...

Agree with Jarred -- it's good for what it is. With that said, you'll never get quality audio with an on-camera mic, because the mic is on-camera. You need to get the mic off the camera and over to your source.

Re: Quality of camera mic

Dont chance it, the built in mic is for soccer moms only.

The built mic has a super OMNI pattern and will pick up stuff around the camera like operator breathing, zoom movements etc. A half way decent after market SHotgun will reach out in a hyper cardoid pattern and actually grab the source sound your pointing at. Plus Panasonic was nice enough to supply a decent MicClip that fits and isolates a shotgun quite nicely.

Wishing you luck on your trip...

Re: Quality of camera mic

Forget the on camera mike for anything but ambient BG sound.
Do yourself and your production a favor and call Rush at EVS for a ME66. For the kind of shoot you're doing, it will be worth it's weight in...well, you know.

Re: Quality of camera mic

I thought it was junk only because for the price of the camera and the incredible picture quality, the mic fell way way short.

It will work for ambient recording to some degree . but even when I used it for family stuff (indoors) I had to turn the volume way up to hear it in play back, which brought up the noise floor horribly.

I know, I know, three grand is not alot considering what the camera can do but that mic is right up there with radio shack IMHO.

Re: Quality of camera mic

I must admit, I have never sold so many mics as I have the ME66/K6... That combo is like, "legendary" now...

Hey guys, today, we just got in 21 of those ME66/K6 mic kits that have the plastic foam-filled case and mic clip. It's a promotional item, so once they're gone, that's it. DVXuser price is $390. First come first serve... ;D
